Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery

Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP) initially showed promise as a minimally invasive mode of excising the prostate for cancer in 2002. Since that time, huge and rapid advancements in technology, incorporating the use of the daVinci Robotic Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA), have made this procedure not only widely acceptable, but the preferred method by many. Studies have unequivocally shown the procedure is equally effective in terms of cancer control, while it allows for a shorter hospital stay (usually one night) and speedier recovery, when compared to the conventional open approach. Drs. Bonzani, Mammen, and Flury all have expertise in this method for removal of the prostate.

Laparoscopy is the viewing of intra-abdominal organs by way of long thin scopes placed through tiny (about an inch) incisions in the skin. Our practice incorporates this methodology for removal of kidneys in the case of cancer.
